Personalized Care for Seniors: A Pathway to Maintaining Independence and Quality of Life

Updated: Jul 5, 2024

Hello! Welcome to our first blog. My name is Dianne Beswitherick. I am one of the founders and managing partners of Senior Solutions Manitoba.

There is a growing need to support our aging population in Winnipeg and the surrounding areas. In the past few months, I began considering what that could look like for me. I expressed some of my ideas to close friends, and after much contemplation, I started to bring my ideas to life.  But I also knew that I didn’t want to go down the path alone; ideally, having a partner in the business was one of my goals.  One evening, a friend discussed what I was pursuing, and she advised me that she had had similar thoughts for the past year and a half.  So, after some conversation, Kari Parks and I decided we would continue with this idea together.  And on April 1, 2024 – Senior Solutions Manitoba came to life!

Our business's mission is “Helping Seniors Live a Full Life.” We intend to do this by offering quality personalized care and resources, ensuring your loved ones are our first priority.

Senior care is crucial, and it greatly impacts the lives of seniors and their families.

The three plagues of old age as per Dr Bill Thomas in the 'Eden Alternative', are Loneliness, Boredom and Helplessness.

The Eden Alternative philosophy of care focuses on moving away from the institutional hierarchical (medical) model of care into a constructive culture of “home” where people direct their own lives.  It focuses on the care of the human spirit in addition to the care of the human body.

Did you know that there are currently more people in Canada over the age of 65 than there are people aged 0 through 15? At Senior Solutions, we understand the unique challenges that come with aging and are here to provide the necessary assistance and resources to allow seniors to live in a community of their choice without feeling institutionalized.

Our Services

We offer a wide range of non-medical services tailored to meet the diverse needs of our clients including:

Companionship

We offer companionship at home or on outings, whether for a few hours or a full day, wherever you reside or want to go.

Appointments

We will pick you up and drive you to your appointment/s.  If you would like, we will also come right inside and take notes of what you are learning in order to relay it to you or your loved ones after.  We can pick you up and drop you off for day surgeries, ensuring that you arrive safely back at home and are made comfortable while you recover.  We also love pets and can take your pets for walks, to the groomer or to the vet.

Household

We do light housekeeping, gardening, planning and preparing light meals, baking, laundry, grocery pickup, and disposal, and we have our SafeCheck Advance Food Safety Certification.

WellBeing

Staying active is crucial for your health and well-being. We are always ready to go for a walk in the park, down your street, or to the mall. If a physiotherapist or other medical technician has assigned you exercises, we can encourage you to do them, video you completing them so that you can check later if you are doing them as instructed, or even perform them alongside you.

Respite

As family or a close friend, do you need some time to yourself but are afraid to leave your loved one? We will keep them company while you go out or take the necessary time.  Or if you want someone to take them on an outing so that you can complete some much-needed tasks on your own.

Our team is compassionate and dedicated to ensuring you or your loved ones have the best care possible.

Some Advice Before You Go

Here are some tips to ensure your loved ones are cared for and always safe.

Maintain Regular Communication

If you don’t live in the same household, ensure that you or someone you know and trust, checks in as much as required.  This will also help them feel less isolated.

Promote Physical Activity

Always encourage your loved ones to participate in activities that are safe and enjoyable for them.

Stay Organized.

Keep a detailed calendar of medical appointments to ensure none get missed
